Following
the trends of a 21st century institution, the Adekunle Ajasin
University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has introduced the e-voting system to
its Students’ Union election which was held recently.
The innovation, according to the Students’ Union Election Committee
(SUEC) Chairman, Dr Benson Igboin, was in line with the institution’s
mission, which he said was associated with science and technology,
enabling students to vote from whatever location between 8.00 a.m. to
1.00 p.m.
He noted that the decision to go electronic was to eliminate the stress students underwent in the past, particularly asthmatic students.
As a recommendation, Dr Igboin said the system should not only be introduced into higher institutions of learning, but the country as a whole.
Students of the institution also applauded the management for the improvement which involved logging-in, choosing a category and casting of vote.
Meanwhile, Adegbola Odunyemi, a 300-Level student of the Faculty of Law emerged the president of the AAU Students’ Union for the 2015/2016 academic session.
Odunyemi in a chat with Campusbeats, observed that though the election process was new, “it was not so difficult for students to adapt.”
Speaking on his agenda for the union, Odunyemi said by the grace of God, he would ensure that students’ incentives are delivered before the end of his tenure, and that fees are not unnecessarily hiked.
“We would also ensure that students are not harassed by the paramilitary groups on campus among others,” he said.
He also thanked the students for considering him capable to pilot the affairs of the union, even as he assured that he would prioritise their welfare.
Other newly elected executives are Ayeni Rita as Vice President; Odunayo Segun as General Secretary; Akinola Gabriel as Assistant General Secretary; Olanrewaju Isaiah Ikuejurojo as Public Relations Officer; Bello Segun as Financial Secretary; Olanrewaju Jadesola as Treasurer; Anibire Oluwaseun as Social Director; Oyelade Ibrahim as Welfare Director and Bamidele Olamide as Sports Director.
