Role of Motivation


In psychology, motivation refers to the initiation, direction, intensity & persistence behavior. Motivation is a temporal & dynamic state that should not be confused with personality or emotion. Motivation is having the encouragement to do something.

Role of motivators:


As the tempo of industrialization grew, so did the workers demand for more leisure time. Holidays gradually became an essential part of amenities for the working classes. Increased leisure alone is not sufficient in the evolution of the demand for tourism. In fact there are many socio-economic factors, which are important. These factors include:

A) Income: level of income forms an important factor in influencing tourism as well as participation in recreational pursuits.
B) Mobility: with the advancement of modes of transport, the mobility has increased greatly. With the building of new & the fast road networks, the mobility has certainly increased manifold.
C) Age & sex: also affects demand. More & more young people are taking holidays now. Younger group participate more in travel because of more income.
D) Education: is yet another important socio-economic factor which influences the demand for travel. The better educated members of the population have higher propensity to travel. Besides, those with better education travel more often.
E) Travel cost: the price levels of various tourist services are especially significant. Countries receiving tourists should be able to compete with the cost of holidays in the generating countries.

Characteristics of motivation:

1. Motivation is continuous & never ending process,
2. Motivation is the dynamic & complex process,
3. It is the psychological process that gives behavior, purpose & directions,
4. Motivation is system oriented,
5. Motivation is the willingness of an individual to exert effort in the pursuit of organizational goals & satisfy some individual needs etc.

The necessities:

Motivated employees can use their skills & organizational resources more efficiently & effectively. This ultimately results in higher productivity of all resources of the organization. A proper motivation system is key to the effectiveness of all managerial functions. Planning & organizing cannot be successful if the employees are not properly motivated. Motivation is core of management. Through motivation, managers encourage employees to direct their energies for achieving organizational goals. Employees can be directed to enlarge their job skill through motivation. A proper motivation system promotes close ties between the enterprise & its employees. Employees begin to feel that enterprise belong to them. Motivated employees concentrate on finding new & more effective ways of doing a job & utilizing resources & more receptive to new things & ready to accept change.
