Facebook to begin notifying users of suspected government-sponsored account compromise

In a bid to enhance user’s account security, by swiftly detecting and preventing online attacks of sorts, Facebook has announced its adding an extra warning to start sending banner notifications to users once it’s noticed some backend account phishing or a possible state-sponsored account compromise.

“We decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored,” Alex Stamos, Facebook’s Chief Security Officer said. “We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.” It’s worthy to note that this new warning doesn’t mean there’s some attack on the social network’s system, the company stated in the announcement post, while advising users to patch their systems if they should come across this warning message.
