If you hope to become the best possible leader, you must become
more organized, focused, and focused on needs and priorities. In my over
three decades of identifying, qualifying, developing, training, and
consulting to over a thousand individuals in either actual or potential
positions of leadership, I have always stressed the need to plan more
effectively, and in a meaningful manner. My focus and emphasis on this
particular component of leading, is so adamant and essential, that my
own company states it, in its name and mission statement. Therefore,
let's proceed to have a brief discussion on why, and how, you can become
a more reliable, higher quality, PLANNER.
1. Prioritize: You'll never achieve anything, if you are consistently running around in circles, without the important focus and direction! Create and understand you personal, as well as your organization's priorities, and emphasize those, rather than sweating the petty stuff. Keep your message on a course to achieve objectives, address needs, and focused on getting key things done. Proportion your time, effort, monies, and other resources, according to needs!
2. Learn all you can; listen effectively: Never get into the dangerous trap of believing you know it all, or no longer need to pay attention to alternatives, concerns, etc! It is incumbent upon a leader to become the most effective listener, so as to be capable of empathizing, and prioritizing. Transform this information from merely facts (or data, or information), to learning, focused on enhancing your judgment and wisdom.
3. Analyze; positive attitude; enhance your aptitude by paying more attention: Start with believing you can handle whatever is needed, and maintain that mindset! Learn all you can, so your skills are optimized, and you are willing, and capable, of properly analyzing what your options are, and how to proceed effectively.
4. Needs-oriented: How will you ever be able to plan effectively, until, and unless you fully understand and appreciate the present, intermediate and longer-term needs of your organization, and stakeholders?
5. Nuances; niches: Every group has a specific heritage, revenues-base, membership, needs and priorities. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all approach, but rather one must use the best approach focused on the specific conditions of your organization. Quality planners utilize a nuanced approach, where the understanding of the membership and stakeholders, is emphasized!
6. Empathize; enrich; economics: How can you hope to plan properly, unless you emphasize the empathetic approach? To lead, the goal must be to enrich the group, but to understand the economics of the group, so that the organization gets the most bang-for-the-buck!
7. Relevant; rational; realistic: Even the finest efforts and attempts to plan effectively, will be relatively meaningless, unless they are relevant, rational, and achievable. While one can reach to be bigger and better, quality planning is about differentiating between mere, pie-in-the-sky, wishful thinking, and doing what makes the essential difference!
You'll never be a great leader, unless you consistently plan to lead! Effective leadership necessitates developing the mindset and focus on real planning!
